Rest, exercise, and good nutrition can help the symptoms of postpartum depression; so can joining a support group or talking to a therapist, psychologist, or social worker.

Another option for many women is taking an antidepressant. It’s a step some moms resist because they believe it says, “I can’t do motherhood.” It’s just the opposite. If you had a bad headache that made you miserable and affected your ability to care for your new baby, you’d get help or try something like getting more rest. If that didn’t work, you’d take something. You do what is needed to “do” motherhood.

The online postpartum support group says it so well:

Being a mother is one of the hardest jobs anyone can do, and having a mood disorder can make a hard job feel impossible. Many women experience some form of postpartum mood disorders. Having a mental illness is not a measure of your worth, social status, race, or religion. Getting treatment is not a sign of weakness, but a sign of strength and bravery.
